Outside of The Frame: Observations on Social-Emotional Learning Strategies In Virtual Adult Learning Spaces
Presenter: Natasha Anderson
Educators and learning facilitators have experienced the following scenario at one point during the pandemic pivot to virtual learning. The virtual discussion is underway, the presenter nudges the students for their participation and is met by a sea of turned-off cameras, deafening silence, or an empty Q&A chat thread. How does one resolve this when the audience isn’t students but rather faculty, peers, or fellow learning professionals? The very professionals who have been burned out from the challenges of balancing virtual lesson plans, becoming 24/7 family caretakers, responding to triggering media stimuli, and personal loss on a global level.
This presentation focuses on Social Emotional Learning, which is a set of processes designed to teach students effective ways of building life skills such as self and social awareness. These processes were utilized by a group of educators in reshaping their virtual learning space as opportunities to support communal healing and mental wellness, foster creative inspiration, and build equitable and inclusive dialogue during the pandemic.
